1790 Margarethengasse Guesthouse
You know what caught me off guard about this place? The name suggests some grand 18th-century mansion, but 1790 Margarethengasse is actually tucked away on Strada Liviu Rebreanu – and honestly, that’s part of its charm. I mean, you’re literally steps from the medieval heart of Sibiu, but on this quiet side street where you can actually hear yourself think. The building itself has that solid, understated Romanian character that doesn’t scream “tourist trap,” which I appreciated after dealing with some of the more flashy places in the main square.
The rooms are what I’d call refreshingly straightforward – clean, comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works. The beds are actually decent (always a gamble with 3-star places), and the windows open properly, which matters more than you’d think when you want that cool mountain air without the AC running all night. What really sold me was the location, though. You can walk to the Bridge of Lies in about three minutes, but when those tour groups descend on the old town around 10 AM, you’re tucked away enough that it doesn’t feel like chaos. I spent a few mornings just wandering down to Piața Mare with my coffee – there’s something about having the cobblestones mostly to yourself before the day really starts.
The staff here actually knows Sibiu, not just the hotel. When I asked about hiking up to the Dumbrava Forest, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – he told me which trail entrance to use and mentioned the best time to catch the light filtering through the trees. That’s the kind of local insight you don’t get at the chain hotels. Parking can be a bit tricky (welcome to European old towns), but they’ll sort you out with options nearby. The 8.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just a solid, well-run guesthouse where you can settle in and explore one of Romania’s most beautiful cities without breaking the bank. Perfect if you want to experience Sibiu like someone who lives there, not just passing through on a tour bus.
