You know how some hotels try way too hard to be boutique-y and end up feeling fake? Well, MAGISTER seven is the opposite of that. I stumbled across this place on Strada Avram Iancu – honestly, I almost walked past it because the entrance is sort of understated in that cool, confident way that screams “we don’t need to show off.” The building itself has this gorgeous blend of medieval Sibiu architecture with modern touches that actually work together, which is rare. Most places either go full tourist-trap medieval or sterile contemporary, but these guys found the sweet spot.
The location is what really got me though. You’re literally in the heart of Sibiu’s Old Town, but on a quieter street that doesn’t get the parade of tour groups that hit the main squares. I mean, you can walk to the Grand Square in maybe three minutes, but at night it’s peaceful enough that you’ll actually sleep well. The rooms – and I’m being honest here – are probably the nicest I’ve stayed in Romania. They’ve got this warm, sophisticated thing going on with rich fabrics and local artwork that feels intentional rather than decorator-y. The bathrooms are particularly impressive, with these rainfall showers that actually have good water pressure (you’d be surprised how often that’s an issue in historic buildings).
What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know Sibiu. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list – he asked what I was in the mood for and sent me to this incredible little restaurant tucked away near the Lutheran Cathedral that I never would have found otherwise. The breakfast spread was solid too, with local cheeses and pastries alongside the usual hotel fare. Parking can be a bit tricky in the Old Town, but they’ve got arrangements with nearby lots, and honestly, once you’re checked in, everything worth seeing is walkable anyway. The Bridge of Lies, the Brukenthal Palace, all those colorful houses on the smaller streets – it’s all right there. I stayed in October when the weather was crisp and the crowds had thinned out, and walking back to the hotel in the evening felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Not to sound too cheesy, but Sibiu has this magical quality in the off-season, and MAGISTER seven captures that perfectly – refined and atmospheric without being pretentious about it.
