Luxusný Apartmán Hrebienok Resort – Tatranské Apartmány
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to this place in Starý Smokovec – the name’s a bit of a mouthful (Luxusný Apartmán Hrebienok Resort), but don’t let that intimidate you. What you’re getting here is actually one of those rare finds where the apartment feels more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place than some sterile hotel room. The location is what really sold me though – you’re literally walking distance from the funicular that takes you up to Hrebienok, which if you know the Tatras at all, you’ll appreciate. I mean, most people end up schlepping their gear from way down in the main part of town, but from here? Five minutes and you’re at the base station.
The apartment itself surprised me with how much thought went into the details. You know what I love? They actually have proper blackout curtains, which sounds silly until you’re trying to sleep during those endless summer evenings when the sun doesn’t set until after 8 PM. The kitchen’s got everything you’d actually want to use – not just the bare minimum – and there’s this little balcony where I’d sit with my morning coffee, watching hikers trudge past with their massive backpacks. The whole setup feels very Slovak mountain chic, if that makes sense. Wood everywhere, but not in that overdone cabin way. More like… well, like someone who lives here year-round decorated it.
What really won me over was the practical stuff that most places get wrong. Parking’s included and actually convenient – you don’t have to haul your luggage up three flights of stairs or hunt for a spot on some random street. The Wi-Fi works properly (tested it on multiple video calls), and the shower has legitimate water pressure, which honestly feels miraculous in some of these mountain towns. The place runs quiet too, even during peak hiking season when Starý Smokovec gets pretty bustling. I think it’s because most of the other guests are serious mountain people who crash early and head out at dawn – not the party crowd you might find down in the main resort areas. The only minor thing I’d mention is that grocery runs require a bit of planning since you’ll want to stock up in Poprad or the bigger shops before heading up, but that’s just mountain life. For what you’re paying and especially given that 9-point rating (which feels spot-on), this place delivers on being a proper base camp for exploring the High Tatras without feeling like you’re roughing it.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
