I mean, it’s a 3-star place on Strada 24 Ianuarie, which honestly sounds more impressive than it is (it’s basically the main road through Călimăneşti), but there’s something genuinely special happening here that most travelers are picking up on.

The thing is, Călimăneşti isn’t exactly a hidden gem – it’s where Romanians go for spa treatments and thermal baths, so you’d expect decent hospitality. But La Mateo feels like it’s run by people who actually care about the details that matter when you’re away from home. The rooms are clean in that “my Romanian grandmother would approve” way, and the staff… well, they’re not going to win any awards for speaking perfect English, but they’ll absolutely help you figure out which thermal baths are worth your time and which ones are tourist traps. I actually learned more about the area from a 10-minute conversation at reception than from any guidebook.

What really sold me was the breakfast situation – nothing fancy, but they know their audience. You’re getting proper Romanian spreads alongside the usual continental stuff, and the coffee is surprisingly good for a smaller hotel. The location works in your favor too, because while you’re technically on the main drag, you’re far enough from the central chaos (if you can call anything in Călimăneşti chaotic) that you’re not dealing with tour bus noise at 7 AM. Plus, there’s actual parking, which honestly is half the battle in Romanian resort towns. The walk to the main thermal complexes is maybe 15 minutes, and you’ll pass some decent restaurants – though I’d ask at the front desk for recommendations since the obvious touristy spots near the baths are pretty forgettable. The value proposition here is solid, especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring the Olt Valley or soaking in thermal waters anyway. It’s the kind of place where you check in, immediately feel like you made the right choice, and then recommend it to people back home without any weird caveats.
