But La Mateo feels like it’s run by people who actually care about the details that matter when you’re away from home. The rooms are clean in that “my Romanian grandmother would approve” way, and the staff… well, they’re not going to win any awards for speaking perfect English, but they’ll absolutely help you figure out which thermal baths are worth your time and which ones are tourist traps. I actually learned more about the area from a 10-minute conversation at reception than from any guidebook.

The walk to the main thermal complexes is maybe 15 minutes, and you’ll pass some decent restaurants – though I’d ask at the front desk for recommendations since the obvious touristy spots near the baths are pretty forgettable. The value proposition here is solid, especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring the Olt Valley or soaking in thermal waters anyway.
