First Impressions
Walking up to La Antigua in Vişeu de Sus, you immediately sense there’s something special about this place. The building has this charming, well-maintained facade that feels authentically Romanian without being overly touristy. I mean, you can tell they’ve put thought into preserving the character while making sure everything works properly — which, honestly, isn’t always a given in smaller Romanian towns.
Location & Getting Around
The hotel sits right on 9 Mai street, and you know what? The location is actually brilliant for exploring this corner of Maramureș County. You’re close enough to the town center that you can walk to local shops and restaurants, but far enough from any noise that you’ll sleep well. What really struck me is how couples seem to gravitate toward this place — there’s something about the setting that just works for romantic getaways. The nearby Vaser Valley railway is only a short drive away, which is perfect if you’re planning to take that famous narrow-gauge train through the mountains.
The Room Experience
My room was comfortable in that unpretentious way that makes you feel at home rather than like you’re staying in a showpiece. The furnishings are solid and well-chosen — not cutting-edge modern, but definitely not dated either. The beds are properly firm (thank goodness), and the bathroom actually has decent water pressure, which can be hit-or-miss in this region. There’s good natural light, and the windows open wide enough to let in that crisp mountain air that makes sleeping here so refreshing.
Dining & Local Flavors
The restaurant serves hearty Romanian fare that feels authentic without being heavy-handed about it. I particularly enjoyed their take on local Maramureș dishes — they clearly know their way around traditional recipes but aren’t afraid to present them nicely. Breakfast is solid, with fresh bread and local ingredients that actually taste like something. You can tell they source locally, which makes sense given how agricultural this area is. The coffee is better than I expected, honestly. The kitchen demonstrates real care in preparation.
Why Guests Love It
This four-star hotel works because it doesn’t try too hard. Recent guests consistently praise the location, and after staying here, I get why — it’s that sweet spot where you feel connected to the real Romania without sacrificing comfort. The staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, offering helpful suggestions about local attractions without being pushy. There’s reliable parking on-site, which matters more than you might think when you’re exploring rural Romania with a rental car. La Antigua manages to feel both relaxed and well-run, which is exactly what you want when you’re using it as a base for exploring the Carpathian foothills and traditional villages nearby.
