Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Iza Hotel on Strada Principala, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place in Sighetu Marmaţiei. But man, was I wrong. This little gem sits right where Strada Principala meets Strada Faget, and you know what? That corner location is actually perfect because you’re close enough to walk into the old town center but far enough out that you’re not dealing with tourist crowds stumbling around at midnight.
The thing about Sighetu Marmaţiei is that it’s one of those Romanian border towns that most people just pass through on their way to Ukraine, but if you actually stop here – especially at the Iza – you’ll get why this place has that crazy high 9.5 rating. The staff genuinely seems to care, which honestly surprised me after staying at some pretty mediocre places in bigger Romanian cities. When I checked in, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a key card and point toward the elevator. He actually walked me through the local area, told me which restaurants were worth trying (there’s this tiny place about three blocks down that serves the best mici I’ve had outside of Bucharest), and even gave me heads up about street parking – apparently it’s free after 6 PM, which saved me probably 20 lei over my two-night stay.
The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works properly. I mean, the shower had actual water pressure, the WiFi didn’t cut out every ten minutes, and the bed was firm enough that I didn’t wake up with a backache. Sometimes that’s all you need, right? What really got me though was the attention to small details – fresh towels every day without me having to ask, a little welcome bottle of water that was actually cold, and these thick curtains that blocked out the street light completely. I’m a light sleeper, so I was worried about noise from Strada Principala, but honestly it was pretty quiet at night. The morning breakfast spread was simple but good quality – none of that processed meat nonsense you get at chain hotels, just proper bread, local cheese, and decent coffee.
If you’re planning to visit the Memorial of the Victims of Communism (which is the main reason most people end up in Sighetu Marmaţiei), the Iza is maybe a 10-minute walk away. Super convenient, but again, you’re not right in the thick of things if you prefer some peace and quiet. The whole experience just felt… genuine, I guess? Like staying at a place where people actually care about doing their job well rather than just going through the motions.
