You know what caught me off guard about Hotel Restaurant Elite? The name makes it sound pretentious, but honestly, it’s just a solid, well-run place that happens to take its food seriously. I’ve stayed here twice now when visiting Drobeta-Turnu Severin, and both times I walked away thinking “yeah, I’d come back.”
The location on Cicero Street is actually pretty smart – you’re close enough to the old fortress ruins that you can walk there in about fifteen minutes, but far enough from the main tourist drag that you’re not dealing with crowds right outside your window. The building itself has this sort of updated Communist-era vibe (I mean that in the best way possible), where they’ve clearly put money into renovating without trying to pretend it’s something it’s not. My room was clean, the bed was surprisingly comfortable, and the bathroom had decent water pressure – honestly, that’s half the battle in this part of Romania. The AC worked well too, which matters more than you’d think during those sweltering July afternoons.
But here’s the thing that really sets this place apart: the restaurant downstairs is legitimately good. Not just “good for a hotel restaurant” – actually good. The chef clearly knows what they’re doing with traditional Romanian dishes, and I had one of the better ciorbă de burtă of my life there. The dining room gets busy with locals in the evenings, which is always a good sign. You’ll hear Romanian, German, and Serbian conversations mixing together, especially on weekends when people drive over from across the Danube. The staff speaks decent English, though they’re more comfortable in Romanian or German – but they’re patient and helpful either way. Parking is straightforward (there’s a small lot behind the building), and check-in was smooth both times I stayed. The front desk person actually remembered me on my second visit, which was a nice touch. Look, it’s a three-star hotel, so don’t expect marble everything or a spa, but the 8.8 rating makes sense when you factor in the price point and what you’re getting. The walls are reasonably soundproof, the WiFi works throughout the building, and they serve a decent breakfast spread with local cheeses and meats alongside the usual continental stuff. If you’re exploring the Iron Gates region or just need a comfortable base in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, this place does the job really well without any fuss.
