Hotel Piatra Mare sits right in the heart of Poiana Brasov, and honestly, the location couldn’t be better if you’re here for the mountains. I mean, you’re literally surrounded by the Carpathians – when you step out in the morning, Piatra Mare peak (the hotel’s namesake) is right there dominating the skyline. It’s one of those places where the view from your room actually matters, and most of them deliver on that front.
The thing about this hotel is that it gets the mountain lodge vibe without feeling too rustic, you know? It’s got that solid 4-star comfort level, but there’s still enough wood and stone in the design to remind you where you are. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling – not fancy-schmancy, but definitely welcoming after a day on the slopes or hiking trails. Speaking of which, the ski lifts are basically a short walk away, which is clutch during winter season when you don’t want to haul your gear too far. Parking was surprisingly easy when I was there, though I imagine it gets tighter during peak ski season in January and February.
What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the area – they pointed me toward some lesser-known hiking trails that weren’t crawling with tourists, and their restaurant recommendations in town were spot-on. The rooms are solid (nothing groundbreaking, but clean and comfortable), and if you get one facing south, you’ll have that mountain view I mentioned. The bathrooms are modern enough, good water pressure, which honestly matters more than you think after a long day outdoors. One small thing – the walls aren’t super thick, so if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs during busy weekends. The breakfast spread is pretty decent too, with enough local touches to make it interesting without being too adventurous for picky eaters.
Here’s the real deal though – Poiana Brasov can get touristy and overpriced, but Hotel Piatra Mare manages to feel more authentic than some of the flashier places. It’s got that 8.4 rating for good reason; it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just a solid mountain hotel that delivers on the basics really well. If you’re planning to explore the area properly – maybe day trips to Brasov’s old town (about 20 minutes down the mountain) or serious hiking in the Bucegi Mountains – this makes a great base. The whole area gets pretty quiet in the evenings, which is either perfect for unwinding or a bit sleepy depending on what you’re after. For the price point and location, it’s hard to argue with what you’re getting here.
