Look, I’ll be honest – when I first saw Hotel Paraul Capra’s location at kilometer 108 on the Transfagarasan, I thought we were staying in the middle of nowhere. But that’s actually the whole point, and once you get there, you realize this spot is pretty much perfect for what it is. The hotel sits right along Romania’s most famous mountain road, and I mean right there – you can literally step outside and you’re on one of the most spectacular drives in Europe. The building itself is straightforward, nothing fancy, but it’s clean and the staff genuinely seems to care about making sure you’re comfortable. What really got me was how quiet it gets at night once the day-trippers head back down the mountain – just the sound of the Capra River (which the hotel’s named after) running nearby.
The rooms are simple but honestly, that’s fine because you’re not here to hang out inside anyway. You’re here because you want to tackle the Transfagarasan without having to drive the whole thing in one day, or maybe you’re planning to hit some of the hiking trails around Balea Lake early in the morning before the crowds show up. The restaurant – well, it’s not going to win any awards, but they do a decent job with traditional Romanian dishes, and after a day of mountain driving, that ciorbă de burtă actually hits the spot. Parking is easy, which is more than I can say for most places along this route, and the check-in was surprisingly smooth even though we arrived pretty late. One thing to know is that the Transfagarasan is closed in winter (usually November through June), so this isn’t exactly a year-round destination – but during those summer months when it’s open, this place fills up fast, especially on weekends.
What makes this spot special isn’t luxury amenities or fancy décor – it’s the location and the fact that you’re staying right in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains. In the morning, you can grab coffee and be at Balea Lake in twenty minutes, or head the other way toward Curtea de Argeș if you want to explore the monastery there. The hotel’s rating of 8.4 makes sense to me because it delivers exactly what it promises: a comfortable base for exploring this incredible area. Sure, it’s a 3-star place, but honestly, anything fancier would feel out of place here. The staff speaks decent English, the WiFi works (though it’s not lightning fast), and there’s something really satisfying about falling asleep to the sound of mountain water after a day of switchbacks and stunning views. If you’re planning to drive the Transfagarasan and want to take your time rather than rushing through it, this is probably your best bet for staying right in the action.
