You know what surprised me about Hotel Olanesti & Spa Medical? It’s actually one of those places that manages to nail both the medical spa thing and the regular vacation vibe without feeling weird about either. I mean, when you first pull up to Str. Bailor (which is honestly easier to find than most hotel streets in Romanian spa towns), the building has this solid, no-nonsense look that immediately tells you they’re serious about the wellness side of things.
The whole Băile Olăneşti area is pretty much built around thermal springs, but this place – they’ve figured out how to do the medical treatments without making you feel like you’re checking into a hospital. The lobby smells like eucalyptus instead of antiseptic, which is a nice touch. Check-in was surprisingly smooth for a 4-star in a smaller Romanian town, though I’d definitely brush up on basic Romanian phrases since not all the front desk staff are super comfortable with English. The rooms are clean and functional rather than fancy – think modern European practical with decent air conditioning (crucial if you’re visiting in summer) and surprisingly good water pressure. Parking’s free and easy, which you’ll appreciate since most guests drive here from Bucharest or other cities.
Here’s where it gets interesting though – the spa facilities are legitimately impressive. The thermal pools use actual local spring water, not just heated regular water like some places try to get away with. The medical side offers everything from balneotherapy to respiratory treatments, and honestly, even if you’re just there for relaxation, the mineral baths leave your skin feeling incredible. I spent most mornings in the thermal pools before the day-trippers arrived around 10 AM – much more peaceful that way. The massage therapists actually know what they’re doing (book ahead, especially on weekends), and the whole complex stays open until evening, so you can easily make a full day of it. The restaurant’s nothing spectacular but serves decent Romanian comfort food – their ciorbă de burtă is actually pretty solid if you’re into that sort of thing. What really won me over was how the staff genuinely seemed to care about whether the treatments were working for people. It’s not just going through the motions – they’ll adjust things based on how you’re responding. The 7.9 rating makes sense because it delivers exactly what it promises without unnecessary frills, and in a town where thermal tourism can feel pretty commercialized, that’s refreshing.
You'll need to let the property know in advance what time you'll arrive.
