Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Hotel Maya on Strada Merilor, you immediately get the sense that this four-star property takes itself seriously — but not in a stuffy way. The building has this clean, modern look that somehow fits perfectly into Horezu’s traditional vibe. I mean, you’re in the heart of Vâlcea County’s pottery capital, so there’s something refreshing about finding a place that feels contemporary without losing its Romanian character. The entrance is welcoming, and honestly, the staff greeting feels genuine rather than rehearsed.

Location & Neighborhood

Here’s what I love about Hotel Maya’s spot — you’re actually in Horezu proper, not stuck on some highway outside town. Couples seem to really get this (they rate the location 8.7, which makes total sense). You can walk to the famous pottery workshops and the Horezu Monastery without needing a car, though having one doesn’t hurt for exploring the broader Oltenia region. The street itself is quiet enough that you’ll sleep well, but you’re still close to local restaurants where you can try proper mici and papanași. Recent guests have been rating the location 8.8, and after spending time here, I get why — it’s that sweet spot between accessible and peaceful.

The Rooms

The accommodations at Hotel Maya strike a nice balance between comfort and functionality. You won’t find over-the-top design, but everything works well and feels thoughtfully arranged. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in this price range), and the bathrooms are modern with good water pressure — something you’ll appreciate after a day of exploring the Carpathian foothills. What I particularly noticed was how quiet the rooms stay, even when the hotel’s busy. The windows are well-insulated, and you get decent views of either the town or the surrounding hills depending on your room.

Breakfast & Dining

The buffet breakfast here is honestly better than I expected for a four-star property in a smaller Romanian town. They’ve got the usual suspects — fresh bread, local cheeses, eggs prepared different ways — but there are also some regional touches that show they’re paying attention. The coffee is decent (not spectacular, but totally drinkable), and there’s usually fresh fruit that actually tastes like something. You know what’s nice? They don’t rush you through breakfast, so you can take your time planning your day over a second cup of coffee.

Why Guests Love It

The free private parking is a bigger deal than you might think — finding secure parking in Romanian town centers can be a real headache, especially if you’re driving a rental car. But beyond the practical stuff, Hotel Maya just feels like a place that gets what travelers actually need. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and the location really does make exploring Horezu and the surrounding pottery villages easy. The combination of modern comfort with genuine local access — plus staff who seem to actually care about your stay — makes this a solid choice for anyone wanting to experience this UNESCO-recognized corner of Romania without sacrificing comfort.

The dynamic young owner went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable; her warm hospitality and genuine enthusiasm sets this pension apart from other establishments. Spotless rooms, minimalistic but sensibly furnished; comfortable beds, immaculate bathrooms with all of the amenities one needs. A varied breakfast, perfect for starting the day, is included in the room price; it is served at the hotel's restaurant, where you can also have lunch or dinner. Free parking at the property. Walking distance to the specialty & gift shops featuring Horezu ceramic.

A new building in the middle of nowhere. Construction still in progress so the view from most rooms is a building site. Nice common spaces, comfortable lift, breakfast reasonably rich. Obviously understaffed, but the few ones are nice and serviceable.
