Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Kolorowa on Konstytucji 3-go Maja, I wasn’t expecting much from a 2-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best travel surprises come when you lower your expectations and just let a place win you over on its own terms.
The thing about Karpacz is that it’s got this wonderful mountain town energy, especially if you’re here for the hiking or just to escape the madness of Warsaw or Krakow for a weekend. Hotel Kolorowa sits right in the thick of it – you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the main drag where all the little mountain restaurants and shops are clustered. I mean, you can practically roll out of bed and grab pierogi for breakfast without really trying. The hotel itself is this cheerful, colorful building (kolorowa means colorful, which makes perfect sense once you see it), and honestly, it just feels welcoming in a way that some of those sterile chain places never manage to pull off.
What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to care about whether you had a good time. The woman at reception – I think her name was Agnieszka – knew exactly which trails were worth your time depending on the weather, and she wasn’t just reciting some script either. She’d lived in Karpacz her whole life and would tell you things like which café has the best sernik and where to park if you’re planning to hit Śnieżka early in the morning before the crowds show up. The rooms are pretty basic, sure, but they’re clean and comfortable, and after a full day of hiking in the Karkonosze mountains, you’re mostly just grateful for a hot shower and a decent bed anyway. I actually slept better there than I have in some fancy places – maybe it’s the mountain air, or maybe it’s just that satisfying tiredness you get from being active all day.
Here’s the thing that really sealed it for me though – I stayed there during one of those shoulder season periods in late September, when the weather can be pretty unpredictable. One morning it was absolutely pouring, and instead of just shrugging when I asked about indoor alternatives, the reception staff actually called around to check which museums and attractions were open, and even offered to drive me to the train station in Jelenia Góra since the bus schedules get weird in bad weather. That’s the kind of service you remember, you know? Plus, with an 8.5 rating, I clearly wasn’t the only one who felt like they went the extra mile. It’s not going to win any design awards, and if you’re looking for a spa or fancy restaurant, you’ll want to look elsewhere. But if you want a genuine, friendly base for exploring one of Poland’s most beautiful mountain regions without breaking the bank, Hotel Kolorowa delivers exactly what it promises – and then some.
