Hotel Imparatul Romanilor Hotel & SPA
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Hotel Imparatul Romanilor on Nicolae Balcescu Street, I wasn’t expecting much from the name alone (it’s quite a mouthful, honestly). But you know what? This place actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. The building itself sits right in the heart of Sibiu’s Old Town, and I mean literally – you’re maybe a two-minute walk from the main square where all those colorful baroque houses line up like they’re posing for postcards. The thing is, unlike some of the tourist traps closer to the center, this spot feels like it belongs to the neighborhood rather than just camping out in it.
The spa part isn’t just marketing fluff either, which was refreshing. After spending days wandering cobblestone streets (and trust me, your feet will thank you for this), I actually used their facilities and felt human again. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable, with that particular European attention to detail where everything just works properly. I mean, the shower pressure was fantastic, which might sound trivial until you’ve stayed in places where it feels like you’re being misted by a houseplant. The staff clearly knows their stuff about the area too – they pointed me toward this little street market on Saturday mornings that I never would’ve found otherwise, tucked away behind the evangelical church.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how it balances being in the thick of things without the chaos. You’re close enough to hear the evening buzz from the square’s restaurants, but the rooms face away from the main pedestrian traffic, so you’re not dealing with drunk tourists singing at 2 AM. Parking was surprisingly manageable too – they’ve got arrangements with a nearby lot, which honestly saves you from circling those narrow medieval streets like a confused pigeon. The 8.4 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s not trying to be some luxury palace, but it delivers on everything it promises. If you’re planning to explore Sibiu properly – and you should, because this city is criminally underrated – this is the kind of base camp that actually enhances the experience rather than just providing a place to crash.
