You know what struck me first about Hotel Hills? It’s actually tucked into this perfect spot in Stará Lesná where you get that mountain village feel without being completely cut off from everything. I mean, you’re literally a stone’s throw from Tatranská Lomnica – which honestly is where most people end up anyway for the serious hiking and that cable car up to Lomnický štít.
The thing about this place is it feels like someone’s well-off relative decided to open their mountain house to guests. The lobby has this lived-in elegance that’s hard to fake, and when I checked in around 3 PM on a Thursday, the staff actually remembered my name from the phone reservation (small touch, but it matters). What really sold me though was stepping onto my room’s balcony – you get this unobstructed view of the High Tatras that changes completely depending on the weather. One morning it was all misty and mysterious, the next day so clear I swear I could see individual trees on the peaks.
The rooms themselves are what I’d call “thoughtfully updated” – they kept the mountain lodge character but added things that actually work, like proper shower pressure and blackout curtains that, well, actually black out the room. Parking is right there without any drama, which if you’ve driven those winding mountain roads, you’ll appreciate not having to circle around looking for a spot. Breakfast runs until 10 AM (thank god, because mountain air makes you sleep like the dead), and they do this local cheese and bread situation that’s way better than your typical hotel spread.
Here’s what I wish someone had told me though – if you’re planning to hit the popular trails, you’re about a 15-minute walk to the Tatranská Lomnica station, or honestly just drive because parking fills up fast during peak season. The hotel gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, which is either perfect or potentially boring depending on what you’re after. July and August get packed with families, but shoulder seasons? It’s almost like having the mountains to yourself. The restaurant downstairs is solid for dinner – nothing revolutionary, but they know how to do Slovak comfort food properly, and after a day of hiking, that’s exactly what you want. One evening I ended up chatting with the bartender about the best lesser-known trails, and turns out he’s been guiding in the area for twenty years. That’s the kind of local knowledge you stumble into at places like this.
