Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel Baril on Nicolae Titulescu street, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in Haţeg. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in unassuming packages, and this little gem absolutely nailed it.
The thing about Haţeg is that it’s perfectly positioned if you’re planning to explore the Hunedoara area – you’re literally a stone’s throw from some incredible medieval sites and the Retezat Mountains are right there waiting for you. What struck me about Hotel Baril though was how the staff actually seemed to get this. They weren’t just checking you in and disappearing; they’d casually mention that the morning light hits Corvin Castle just right if you head out early, or that the local market on Thursdays is worth wandering through. The front desk guy (I think his name was Radu?) even sketched out a little map showing the back roads to avoid tourist buses – that’s the kind of insider knowledge you can’t Google.
The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works properly, which honestly is more than I can say for some four-star places I’ve stayed. The beds are actually decent – firm enough that you won’t wake up with a sore back after hiking around Sarmizegetusa Regia all day. What really impressed me was the attention to small details: proper reading lights, enough outlets for your devices, and the Wi-Fi actually reaches every corner of the room. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, and the hot water pressure is surprisingly good for this part of Romania. I mean, after a long day exploring ruins, that hot shower hits different.
Here’s what really sets this place apart though – the breakfast spread is way better than you’d expect, with local cheeses and honey that probably came from somewhere within a few kilometers. The dining room overlooks a quiet courtyard, and in the mornings you can hear the church bells from the old Orthodox church down the street mixing with the sounds of the town waking up. Parking is easy and free, which is a relief because navigating some of these older Romanian streets with a rental car can be… well, let’s just say it’s an adventure. The location is actually perfect – close enough to walk to the town center and grab dinner, but far enough from the main road that you’re not dealing with truck noise all night. During my stay in late spring, the evenings were quiet enough that I could leave the windows open and just listen to the town settling down for the night.
