You know what? Hotel Apollo Central surprised me. I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the building on Nicolae Teclu Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But there’s something about this spot that just works, especially if you’re the type who wants to actually experience Sibiu rather than hide away in some sterile chain hotel.
The location is what really sold me on this place. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Old Town’s cobblestone streets, but you’re tucked away enough that you’re not dealing with the tourist crowds stumbling back from the bars at 2 AM. The street itself is pretty quiet – mostly locals heading to work in the morning, which honestly made me feel like I was getting a glimpse of real Romanian life instead of just the postcard version. Parking was easier than I expected too, which anyone who’s driven through Sibiu’s narrow streets will appreciate. The front desk staff actually knew the neighborhood well enough to point me toward a decent local restaurant (not just the obvious tourist traps around Piața Mare) and warned me about which streets get crazy busy during the evening rush.
What I really liked was how the hotel felt lived-in rather than overly polished. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re comfortable in that unpretentious way – good beds, hot water that actually stays hot, and windows that open properly so you can get some fresh air. The breakfast room has this slightly dated charm that reminded me of visiting relatives in Eastern Europe. Nothing fancy, but the coffee was strong and the bread was clearly from a local bakery. I actually spent more time than I planned just sitting there in the mornings, watching the neighborhood wake up through the windows. The WiFi worked fine throughout the building, which is more than I can say for some fancier places I’ve stayed. One small thing that bugged me – the elevator is pretty slow and makes this grinding noise that had me wondering if I should take the stairs instead, but hey, it got me where I needed to go. Overall, it’s one of those places where you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than just passing through. If you’re looking for marble bathrooms and a concierge, look elsewhere. But if you want a solid base for exploring Sibiu that won’t break the bank and actually feels connected to the city around it, Apollo Central does the job really well.
