You know what caught me off guard about Holiday House Sabala 2? I was expecting just another mountain lodge in Stará Lesná, but this place actually feels like someone’s really thoughtful relative designed it for comfort rather than Instagram. The location on the main road through the village is honestly perfect – close enough that you’re not hiking to get anywhere, but tucked back just enough that you’re not hearing every car that passes through to the High Tatras.
The thing about Stará Lesná is that it’s one of those Slovak villages that tourists blow right through on their way to Skalnaté Pleso or the cable cars, which means you get this authentic mountain town vibe without the crowds. Holiday House Sabala 2 gets this completely. The owners clearly know their guests are here for the hiking and the fresh air, so everything’s set up with that in mind – proper boot storage, decent WiFi for planning routes, and honestly the best part, these huge windows that frame the forest views without making you feel like you’re living in a fishbowl. I mean, you wake up and there’s just this wall of green spruce trees, sometimes with mist rolling through if you’re there in the shoulder seasons.
What really sells me on this place is the attention to details that matter when you’re actually staying somewhere, not just photographing it. The beds are firm enough that you don’t wake up feeling like you slept in a hammock, the shower pressure is surprisingly good for a mountain location, and there’s enough space to spread out your gear without tripping over everything. The breakfast situation is solid too – none of that fancy hotel nonsense, just really good local bread, proper Slovak cheese, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a machine. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the whole place just smells right – like wood and that clean mountain air, not like industrial cleaning products or someone’s trying too hard with air fresheners. The staff actually knows the area, which is rarer than you’d think. They’ll tell you which trails are muddy after rain, where to park in Tatranská Lomnica if you’re doing a day trip, that sort of local knowledge that saves you time and frustration. Winter’s obviously their busy season with the skiing, but I was there in late September and it was perfect – still warm enough for hiking, but you could feel that crisp edge to the air that makes you want to curl up somewhere cozy at the end of the day.
