So I stumbled across Hazanéző Panzió during a trip through Corund, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from a place tucked away on Új utca – I mean, “New Street” doesn’t exactly scream historic charm, right? But sometimes you get pleasantly surprised. This little 4-star gem sits at number 617, and the moment you pull up (parking’s actually pretty easy, which is a relief in this part of Transylvania), you realize someone here really gives a damn about the details.
The thing about Corund is that it’s proper pottery country – you know, those gorgeous ceramic pieces that cost a fortune in Budapest gift shops? Well, this is where they’re actually made, and the Hazanéző folks have clearly embraced that heritage. The breakfast room has these incredible hand-painted plates that I’m pretty sure came from workshops literally down the road, and the whole place has this authentic Hungarian-Romanian vibe that doesn’t feel forced or touristy. The owners – and you’ll definitely meet them, this isn’t some corporate chain – speak enough English to help you out, but they’re genuinely excited when you attempt a few words in Hungarian or Romanian. I picked up that “hazanéző” roughly translates to “homecoming,” which honestly captures the feeling pretty well.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to balance that cozy pension atmosphere with actual quality – I mean, a 9.7 rating isn’t something you see every day. The rooms are spotless without being sterile, and the beds are properly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses, trust me). You’ll hear the morning sounds of the village waking up, but it’s pleasant rather than disruptive – roosters, church bells, maybe a tractor heading to the fields. The breakfast spread focuses on local ingredients, and they do this amazing thing with fresh bread and local honey that’ll ruin you for hotel continental breakfasts elsewhere.
Here’s what I’d tell someone thinking about staying here: if you’re doing the typical Transylvania castle-hopping route, Corund makes a fantastic base that’s way more authentic than the tourist-heavy spots around Brașov. You’re close enough to Târgu Mureș for supplies or a proper restaurant meal, but far enough out to experience what rural Transylvania actually feels like. The ceramic workshops are worth a morning even if you’re not usually into that sort of thing – I ended up shipping home way more pottery than I planned. Just be aware that this is village life, so if you need 24-hour room service or a gym, you’re in the wrong place. But if you want to wake up to mountain views, chat with locals who remember when things were very different around here, and sleep in a bed that actually feels like someone’s home rather than a corporate sleep pod, then Hazanéző Panzió gets it right.
