You know what? Hanul Morii is one of those places that completely catches you off guard – in the best possible way. I’ll be honest, when I first saw Valea Jderii on the map, I thought we were heading into the middle of nowhere in Cluj County. But that’s actually the whole point of this place, and once you wind through those Romanian countryside roads near Ciucea, you start to get it.
The hotel sits in this impossibly green valley that feels like it’s been tucked away from the world for centuries. I mean, “hanul” literally means inn in Romanian, and this place has that authentic feel without being cheesy about it. The building itself has this beautiful traditional architecture – stone and wood that looks like it grew out of the hillside, but inside it’s completely modern without losing its character. The rooms are spacious (I’m talking actual space to move around, not those cramped boxes you get in city hotels), and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve slept in. What really got me though was waking up to these massive windows that frame the valley like a living painting. No city noise, no traffic – just birds and the occasional sound of the stream that runs nearby.
The restaurant is where this place really shines, and I say this as someone who’s pretty picky about food. They do this thing where they source everything locally – I’m talking vegetables from gardens you can literally see from the terrace, and meat from farms down the valley. The chef (who I think might actually be one of the owners) comes out and talks to guests about the dishes, which sounds touristy but feels genuine when it happens. Try the ciorbă de burtă if you’re feeling adventurous, or stick with their grilled trout if you want something safe but incredible. The wine list is small but thoughtful – lots of Romanian varietals that you won’t find anywhere else.
What I didn’t expect was how active you can be here. There are hiking trails that start basically from the hotel’s back door, and they’ll pack you a lunch if you ask. The area around Ciucea has some fascinating history too – there’s this old castle nearby that most tourists never hear about, and the staff actually knows the stories behind these places instead of just pointing you toward a brochure. Parking is never an issue (thank god), and the Wi-Fi is surprisingly solid if you need to work – I actually extended my stay by two days because I could get things done from the terrace while looking at those hills.
Look, this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. If you need shopping and nightlife, you’ll be disappointed. But if you want to remember why you started traveling in the first place – that feeling of discovering something real and beautiful – then Hanul Morii delivers. The fact that it’s earned a 9.1 rating makes complete sense once you’re there. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself planning your return visit before you’ve even checked out.
