You know what struck me first about Hanu lu Mos Opinca? The name itself – it’s one of those wonderfully quirky Romanian touches that already tells you this isn’t going to be your standard chain hotel experience. Tucked away on Strada Roci, which honestly isn’t the most scenic street in Deva, this little 3-star gem completely surprised me with how much character it packs into what could have been just another budget stay.
The thing is, Deva isn’t exactly crawling with accommodation options, especially ones that feel like someone actually cares about the place. Most travelers are here for the citadel fortress perched on that dramatic volcanic hill – and from certain rooms, you can actually catch glimpses of it, which the staff will point out with genuine pride. The location works better than you’d expect too. Sure, Strada Roci isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but you’re literally a 10-minute walk from the main pedestrian area around Piata Victoriei, and there’s this excellent traditional restaurant (Casa Romaneasca) practically around the corner that serves the kind of ciorbă de burtă that’ll make you understand why Romanians are so passionate about their tripe soup.
What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both homey and professional – honestly, that 9.1 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here. The rooms are clean without being sterile, the staff actually remembers your name after day one, and there’s this attention to small details that bigger hotels often miss. I mean, they leave proper Romanian coffee (not that instant stuff) in the rooms, and the bathrooms have those little touches like decent toiletries and towels that don’t feel like sandpaper. The breakfast spread isn’t fancy, but it’s solid – fresh bread, local cheese, and they’ll make you eggs however you want them if you ask nicely. Parking was surprisingly easy too, which anyone who’s driven through Romanian city centers will appreciate. The nights are pleasantly quiet, even though you’re not far from the center – something about the way the building sits just seems to muffle the usual urban soundtrack. Check-in was smooth, and they speak decent English, though a few words of Romanian will earn you some genuine smiles. This is the kind of place where you end up chatting with other guests over breakfast, sharing tips about the best hiking trails up to the citadel or debating whether the local wine is actually underrated (it is, by the way).
