You know what caught me off guard about the Greenwood? I was expecting another generic mountain hotel when I pulled up to Nový Smokovec 41, but this place actually has some serious character tucked into the High Tatras. The building itself sits perfectly positioned – you’re literally a few minutes’ walk from the funicular station that takes you up to Hrebienok, which honestly saves you so much hassle if you’re planning any serious hiking.
The thing about staying in Starý Smokovec is that most tourists rush through to get to the bigger resorts, but the Greenwood gets why you’d want to linger here. The staff – and I mean this – actually know the trails. Not just the tourist-friendly ones, but they pointed me toward this incredible loop that starts behind the Grand Hotel (you know, that massive yellow building everyone photographs) and winds up through forests most people never see. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star, nothing revolutionary but thoughtfully done. My room faced the mountains, and I could hear the little train chugging by in the mornings, which sounds annoying but was actually pretty charming. The beds are properly firm – important after a day scrambling around Skalnaté pleso.
What really sold me, though, was how the place handles the shoulder seasons. I was there in late September when half the mountain restaurants were already closing down, but the Greenwood’s restaurant was still doing these hearty Slovak dishes that hit exactly right after being outside all day. Their goulash is legit, and the beer selection includes some local stuff you won’t find in Bratislava. The whole vibe is relaxed in a way that feels authentic – you’ll see actual Slovak families there, not just tour groups. Parking is included, which saves you from the nightmare of finding a spot during peak hiking season, and check-in was refreshingly straightforward. The woman at the front desk drew me a little map showing where to catch the best sunrise views without having to hike for hours. That 9-rating makes sense when you experience these kinds of details. Sure, it’s not the fanciest place in the Tatras, but there’s something satisfying about a hotel that knows exactly what it is and does it really well. If you’re planning to actually explore the mountains rather than just pose for Instagram shots, the Greenwood gets it.
