Golden Deevi
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Golden Deevi on Strada Dumitru Suciu – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential area of Sălişte that most people just drive through on their way to the mountains. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes this place special. The hotel sits in this perfect spot where you’re close enough to Sibiu (about 20 minutes by car) but far enough out that you actually get to experience the Carpathian foothills without the tourist crowds. The building itself has this understated elegance – not flashy or trying too hard, just solid Romanian hospitality with modern touches that actually work.
What really got me was the attention to detail that you only notice after you’ve been there a day or two. The rooms are genuinely comfortable (and I’m picky about mattresses), but it’s the little things that stick with you – like how quiet it gets at night, which is rare for a 4-star place. You can actually hear the wind through the trees instead of traffic or other guests stomping around. The staff clearly knows the area well; they gave me directions to this incredible hiking trail that wasn’t on any tourist map, and when I mentioned wanting to visit some traditional villages, they mapped out a route that avoided the main roads. Parking is straightforward – you don’t have to circle around looking for a spot like you do in Sibiu’s old town – and check-in was refreshingly quick without feeling rushed.
The dining situation is solid too, though I’ll be honest, I ended up exploring the local restaurants more than eating at the hotel. But that’s partly because Sălişte has some gems if you know where to look, and the hotel staff pointed me toward places I never would have found otherwise. The whole area comes alive during hiking season (late spring through early fall), but if you’re looking for a peaceful winter retreat, this works perfectly for that too. The heating actually works – sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many mountain hotels get that wrong. What really sealed it for me was the overall vibe; it feels like staying at a well-run family place rather than a corporate chain. The 9.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing everything right in a spot that most travelers overlook completely.
