You know what caught me completely off guard about this place? I was driving through Vama Buzăului expecting maybe some basic mountain lodge, and suddenly there’s this collection of traditional Mongolian yurts nestled right against the Carpathian foothills. I mean, talk about unexpected – it’s like someone plucked a piece of the steppes and dropped it in the middle of Romania’s countryside.
The whole setup is honestly pretty brilliant once you get your head around it. These aren’t flimsy camping knockoffs either – the yurts are properly constructed with thick felt walls and wooden frames, so you’re actually warm at night (which matters up here, trust me). The name “Spiritul Zimbrului” means “Spirit of the Bison,” and there’s something almost mystical about lying in your circular room listening to the wind move through the valley. Each yurt has its own little wood-burning stove, and honestly, there’s nothing quite like falling asleep to the sound of crackling wood after a day exploring the Buzău Mountains. The beds are surprisingly comfortable too – I was half-expecting to be sleeping on felt mats, but they’ve got proper mattresses and really good linens.
What really sells this place though is the location on Strada Principală – you’re literally a stone’s throw from some incredible hiking trails, and the family running it actually knows the area inside and out. They pointed me toward this unmarked path that leads to some limestone formations I never would’ve found on my own. The breakfast situation is solid too, with local honey and homemade bread that tastes like someone’s grandmother made it at 5 AM (which she probably did). Parking’s no problem – there’s plenty of space, and you don’t have to worry about city noise or traffic. The only sounds you’ll hear are maybe some sheep bells in the distance and the occasional bird.
One thing to know – this isn’t luxury glamping in the Instagram sense. There’s no heated bathroom floors or champagne service, but that’s sort of the point. It’s comfortable and clean, with shared bathroom facilities that are actually well-maintained, and the whole experience feels authentic rather than manufactured. The 9.4 rating makes total sense once you spend a night here – it’s one of those places that delivers exactly what it promises and then some. If you’re the type who needs room service and a concierge, this probably isn’t your scene, but if you want to disconnect and experience something genuinely different without sleeping on the ground, this is pretty much perfect. Plus, the value is incredible – you’re getting a unique experience for the price of a standard hotel room in Bucharest.
