Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Gerlach on Droga do Tadziaków – it’s tucked away on this quiet residential street that you’d probably miss if you weren’t specifically looking for it. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. While everyone else is fighting for parking spots near the main Krupówki strip, you’re settled into this peaceful corner of Zakopane where you can actually hear the birds in the morning instead of tour buses rumbling past your window.
The hotel itself has that unpretentious, family-run vibe that’s getting harder to find these days. Sure, it’s a 3-star place, so don’t expect marble lobbies or fancy spa treatments, but the rooms are genuinely comfortable and – this matters more than you’d think – actually warm during those chilly mountain evenings. I stayed there in late September, and while other friends were complaining about their budget hotels being freezing, I was perfectly cozy. The staff seems to know their stuff too; they gave me solid recommendations for hiking trails that weren’t completely overrun with tourists, including this great route toward Morskie Oko that starts from a trailhead most visitors never hear about. The woman at reception (I think she was the owner’s daughter?) spoke excellent English and actually took time to mark up a local map for me rather than just handing over some generic tourist brochure.
What really sold me on the place was its location relative to everything you actually want to do in Zakopane. You’re maybe a 15-minute walk from the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the crowds and noise. There’s this little grocery store practically next door where locals shop – not touristy at all, just normal prices for snacks and water bottles. And if you’re driving, parking is straightforward and free, which honestly saves you a headache and probably 50 złoty per day compared to staying closer to the center. I mean, Zakopane isn’t huge anyway, so being a bit outside the chaos just means you get better sleep and can still walk anywhere you need to go. The breakfast was simple but fresh – proper Polish bread, local cheese, and coffee that didn’t taste like it came from a machine. Nothing fancy, but exactly what you want before heading out for a day in the Tatras.
