You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place tucked away on Strada Vulturului, but Ensana Ursina completely caught me off guard. I mean, that 9.3 rating seemed almost too good to be true until I actually got there. The hotel sits in this quiet residential area of Sovata – you won’t hear the usual tourist bustle, just the occasional dog barking and maybe some kids playing in the distance. It’s one of those streets where locals actually live, which honestly makes the whole experience feel more authentic.
The thing about Sovata is that it’s built around those incredible salt lakes, and the Ursina gets this just right. They’ve managed to capture that whole spa town vibe without being pretentious about it. The lobby has this old-world Romanian charm – not fancy, but comfortable in a way that makes you want to settle in with a book. Check-in was surprisingly smooth (the staff actually remembered my name the next day, which never happens at bigger places), and I noticed they keep the common areas spotless without that sterile hotel smell you get sometimes. The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-run 3-star – clean, functional, with decent Wi-Fi that actually works. The beds are properly comfortable, and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with temperamental plumbing.
What really sets this place apart though is how it fits into Sovata itself. You’re walking distance from Lacul Ursu – that’s the main salt lake where everyone goes to float around like they’re in the Dead Sea. But here’s the thing locals know: early morning is when you want to hit the lake, before the day-trippers arrive from Cluj or Brașov. The hotel staff will tell you this too, which I appreciated. Parking is easy (there’s a small lot behind the building), and you’re close enough to the town center that you can walk to the decent restaurants without needing a car. The thermal baths are maybe a 10-minute stroll, and there’s this little bakery on the way that does amazing covrigi in the mornings. I ended up going there every day – the smell of fresh bread just pulls you in. The whole area gets pretty busy during peak season, but the Ursina’s location keeps you just far enough from the chaos while still being connected to everything. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax and feel like you’re experiencing a real Romanian spa town, not just passing through it.
