Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to the Emerald Old Town on Tribunei Street, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s tucked into this narrow cobblestone street that most tourists probably rush past on their way to the main square, but that’s actually part of what makes it so perfect. You’re literally in the heart of Sibiu’s medieval center, but it feels like you’ve discovered something the crowds haven’t figured out yet.
The moment you step inside though – wow. The lobby has this gorgeous blend of restored period details and modern touches that doesn’t feel forced or overdone. I mean, you can tell they put serious thought into preserving the building’s character while making it actually comfortable for travelers. The staff here genuinely knows their stuff too, not just about the hotel but about Sibiu itself. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic list – he actually asked what I was in the mood for and suggested this incredible little Romanian place two streets over that I never would have found on my own.
Here’s what really sold me on this place: the rooms are spacious (which is rare in these old town hotels), and the beds are actually good. You know how sometimes boutique hotels sacrifice comfort for style? Not here. The bathrooms are modern and well-designed, with proper water pressure – trust me, after walking around Sibiu’s hills all day, you’ll appreciate a decent shower. The soundproofing is surprisingly effective too, considering you’re right in the old town. I could hear the church bells in the morning, which was lovely, but none of the late-night chatter from people heading home from the bars around Piața Mare.
What I really love is how they’ve managed to feel authentically Sibiu without being kitschy about it. The breakfast room overlooks a quiet courtyard, and sitting there with coffee in the morning while planning your day feels perfectly civilized. Speaking of breakfast – it’s actually substantial, with local options alongside the usual continental spread. The location means you can walk to everything worth seeing (the Bridge of Lies is literally three minutes away), but you’re on a quieter street so you’re not dealing with tour groups gathering under your window at 8 AM.
The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can be tricky – the old town streets weren’t exactly designed for cars, obviously. But honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need to move your car anyway. Everything’s walkable, and there’s something really satisfying about just wandering these medieval streets whenever you want, then having this comfortable, well-run place to come back to. For a 4-star hotel with a 9.5 rating, it actually lives up to the hype, which doesn’t happen as often as you’d think.
