You know what caught me off guard about Drugi Dom? The name literally means “Second Home” in Polish, and honestly, that’s exactly what it feels like when you walk through those doors on Królewska Street. I’ve stayed at plenty of places in the Tatra region, but this one actually lives up to its 4-star rating without being pretentious about it.
The location is pretty perfect if you know Kościelisko at all – you’re right in the heart of things but not dealing with the tourist chaos you get closer to Zakopane proper. I mean, you can walk to some incredible hiking trails without fighting through crowds of tour buses, which is honestly why most people come to this area anyway. The building itself has that mountain lodge vibe going on, but it’s been updated in all the right ways. My room had these massive windows facing the Tatras, and waking up to that view… well, it sort of makes you forget about whatever brought you here in the first place. The beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how many mountain hotels miss this basic requirement), and there’s proper heating – crucial if you’re visiting outside summer months because it gets properly cold up here.
What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area. Not just the obvious stuff tourists ask about, but real local knowledge. The guy at reception told me about this trail that connects to the main Giewont route but avoids the worst crowds, and he was absolutely right. They’ve got secure parking too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling ski equipment or hiking gear. The breakfast spread was solid – proper Polish mountain food alongside the usual hotel fare, and they actually had decent coffee, not that watery stuff you sometimes get. I stayed during shoulder season in October, so it was pretty quiet, but I imagine summer gets busier with families heading to the nearby thermal pools. The whole place runs smoothly though – check-in was painless, WiFi actually worked throughout the building, and housekeeping didn’t wake me up at dawn like some places do. If I’m being completely honest, the only thing that bugged me was the lack of a proper bar area for evening drinks, but there are plenty of spots within walking distance on Królewska Street for that. For what you pay, especially compared to similar places closer to Zakopane center, Drugi Dom delivers on being that comfortable base camp you actually want to return to after a long day in the mountains.
