I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Dovolenkový dom Active & Relax on Na kopci street, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name’s a bit of a mouthful, and the location up on that hill in Veľká Lomnica felt almost too quiet after the bustle of the main tourist areas. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t shout about themselves.
The thing about this spot is that it actually lives up to its “Active & Relax” promise in a way that doesn’t feel forced. I mean, you’re literally sitting at the foot of the High Tatras here – I could see the peaks from my room window, and honestly, it made me want to lace up my hiking boots immediately. The staff seemed to get that most guests are here for the mountains, not just to lounge around (though the relaxation part is definitely covered too). They had trail maps everywhere and were genuinely helpful about routes, not just the touristy ones everyone does. The parking situation is actually pretty decent too, which matters when you’re hauling ski gear or hiking equipment.
What really got me was the attention to details that matter when you’ve been out all day. The rooms have this sort of mountain lodge feel without being kitschy about it – clean lines, comfortable beds that you actually want to sink into after a long hike, and bathrooms where the hot water pressure doesn’t disappoint. I stayed during shoulder season in late spring, so it was pretty peaceful, but I imagine it gets busy during peak summer and winter months. The breakfast setup was solid – nothing fancy, but they had local touches that felt authentic rather than trying-too-hard authentic, if you know what I mean. And the evening atmosphere? Well, after spending time in some of the more crowded resort towns, there was something really appealing about the quieter vibe here. You can actually hear yourself think, maybe catch some stars if the weather cooperates. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night because you’re not quite ready to leave – and with a 9 out of 10 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who felt that way.
