You know what’s funny about Dom Potok? I almost walked right past it the first time – it’s tucked away on Piastowska Street in this quiet residential part of Karpacz, and honestly, from the outside it looks more like someone’s well-kept family home than a hotel. Which, I mean, is basically what it is, and that’s exactly why it works so well.
The thing about staying here is that you’re getting the real Karpacz experience, not the touristy stuff down by the main drag where all the souvenir shops are. Piastowska runs parallel to the busy center, so you’re literally a five-minute walk from all the restaurants and the cable car station, but when you step outside Dom Potok in the morning, it’s just… quiet. You hear birds instead of tour buses, you know? The owner – I think her name was Marta – actually lives on-site, and she’s one of those people who genuinely seems to care whether you find the hiking trail you’re looking for. She drew me this little map on the back of a receipt once, showing me how to get to Sniezka without dealing with the weekend crowds.
The rooms are simple but really thoughtfully done – nothing fancy, but everything works, and the beds are actually comfortable (which honestly can’t be said for every place in the Sudetes). I stayed in October when the weather was getting crisp, and the heating was perfect, not too dry like those old radiator systems. There’s this tiny breakfast room where they serve proper Polish breakfast – none of that continental nonsense with stale pastries – and if you time it right around 8 AM, you’ll probably end up chatting with other guests about trail conditions or where to get the best oscypek down in the valley. The parking situation is straightforward too, which matters if you’re driving up from Wrocław or wherever – just a small lot right there, no hunting around side streets with your luggage.
What really gets me about this place is the rating situation – 9.3 out of 10, which seems crazy high until you stay there and realize it’s because they just… do everything right without making a big deal about it. The shower has good pressure, the WiFi actually works, check-in takes two minutes, and when I had to leave early for a train, Marta was up at 6 AM to make sure I got coffee before heading out. It’s not luxury – it’s a 2-star place and feels like one – but it’s the kind of spot where you sleep really well and wake up already planning when you’ll come back. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the whole building just smells clean, like fresh laundry and wood polish, not that weird hotel air freshener smell you get in bigger places.
