Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of mountain retreats in Romania, but Dacii Liberi Resort and Spa in Petrova actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. You drive up Strada Principala (the main road through town, basically) and around number 803, you’ll spot this place tucked into the hillside. First thing that hit me was how quiet it gets once you’re past the reception area – I mean, Petrova isn’t exactly bustling, but there’s something about the way they’ve positioned the buildings that just swallows up any road noise.
The spa part isn’t just thrown together like some hotels do. They’ve got this whole thermal thing going on that actually works with the natural landscape around here. What I really appreciated was the staff – they know their stuff about the local hiking trails and will honestly tell you which ones are worth your time versus the tourist traps. The rooms are solid (I stayed in one facing the valley, and you wake up to this ridiculous view that changes completely depending on the weather), though I will say the Wi-Fi can be spotty if you’re trying to work from the far wing. The restaurant surprised me too – they source a lot locally, which you’d hope for but don’t always get. Their take on traditional Romanian dishes is… well, it’s not your grandmother’s cooking, but it’s respectful to the originals while being interesting enough that you’re not just eating the same thing you could get anywhere in the region.
Here’s the thing about this place – it’s got that 5-star polish without feeling stuffy. You know how some luxury hotels make you feel like you need to whisper in the lobby? Not here. The pool area gets pretty lively during summer evenings, and there’s this whole scene where families mix with couples on romantic getaways, and somehow it works. Parking is actually straightforward (they’ve got a proper lot, not some cramped afterthought), and check-in was smooth even when I showed up later than planned. The only minor gripe I’d have is that the breakfast gets picked over pretty quickly on weekends – but honestly, with a 9.1 rating, I expected it to be busier than it was. If you’re thinking about visiting this part of Romania and want something that feels special without being pretentious, this place gets it right. Just maybe book dinner reservations ahead of time, especially if you’re coming during peak season.
