You know what caught me off guard about Cottage Tatry so saunou? I’d driven through Tatranská Štrba so many times heading to the main ski areas, but I never really paid attention to this little pocket near Lieskovec. It’s actually tucked away in this quiet residential area where you can hear the morning trains heading up to Štrbské Pleso — which sounds annoying but is oddly comforting once you get used to it.
The cottage itself feels more like staying at someone’s really well-appointed mountain house than a typical hotel. I mean, the sauna is obviously the star here (it’s literally in the name), and honestly, after a day hiking around the Tatras or dealing with those packed cable cars, sinking into that dry heat while looking out at the forest is pretty much perfect. The owners clearly know their stuff — the temperature’s just right, and they stock it with proper birch branches if you’re into that whole experience. What I really appreciated was how they handle the booking system for sauna time; you’re not fighting with other guests or dealing with some complicated reservation nonsense.
The rooms have this cozy Slovak mountain vibe without going overboard on the folksy decorations. Clean lines, solid wood furniture, and — this is key — actually good Wi-Fi, which you can’t take for granted in these mountain villages. Parking’s right there, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling ski gear or hiking equipment. The kitchen setup is legit too; I actually cooked a few meals instead of driving down to Poprad every night, and they stock it with decent cookware, not the usual bent pans and dull knives you get in most places.
Location-wise, you’re about fifteen minutes from Štrbské Pleso if you’re doing the tourist thing, but honestly, some of the best hiking starts right from the village. There’s this trail that heads toward Kriváň that most people miss because they’re focused on the big-name spots. The family running the place will point you toward these local gems if you ask — they’re not trying to upsell you on tours or anything, just genuinely helpful about the area. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too; none of that hovering-over-your-shoulder-while-you-fill-out-forms thing you get at bigger hotels.
I stayed during shoulder season in October, so it was pretty quiet, but I imagine summer gets busier with families. The cottage handles maybe six or eight people max, so it never feels crowded. What really sealed it for me was the morning routine — coffee on the little terrace, watching the mist clear off the mountains, and knowing I could hit the sauna again before checkout. It’s the kind of place where you actually relax instead of just taking photos to prove you were somewhere cool.
