You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to this cottage in Poeni – I mean, it’s basically tucked away in the middle of nowhere on a quiet stretch near the Valea Draganului river. But honestly, that’s exactly what makes it special. The moment you step out of your car (and yes, there’s proper parking right there, which is actually a relief after driving those winding Romanian country roads), you hear it – the constant, gentle sound of the river flowing just steps away from your door.
The cottage itself is charmingly rustic without being rough around the edges, if that makes sense. It’s the kind of place where the wooden floors creak just enough to remind you you’re in an old building, but everything works perfectly and feels genuinely cozy. The owner clearly knows what travelers actually need – there’s a proper coffee setup, the WiFi is surprisingly solid for being this far from Florești, and the beds are comfortable enough that you’ll sleep through the night despite being excited about waking up to those river views. I spent most of my evenings on the little terrace just watching the water and listening to the sounds of the countryside settling in for the night. During the day, you can walk right down to the riverbank – it’s literally your backyard – and the water is clean enough that locals fish here regularly.
What really struck me about this place is how it feels like you’re staying at a friend’s family cottage rather than a commercial operation. The hosts are genuinely helpful without being intrusive, and they actually live in the area, so they know things like which trails are best for hiking and where to buy fresh bread in the morning (there’s a small shop about ten minutes away in the village center). The location means you’re close enough to day-trip to places like Turda or even Cluj-Napoca if you want some city time, but far enough away that you’ll actually unwind and remember what quiet sounds like. I’d definitely recommend bringing some groceries with you since dining options are limited locally, but honestly, cooking in the cottage kitchen while listening to the river through the open windows was one of the highlights of my stay. Just be aware that if you’re someone who needs constant activity or nightlife, this isn’t your spot – but if you’re looking to disconnect and recharge somewhere genuinely peaceful, this little cottage delivers exactly what it promises.
