You know what? I wasn’t expecting much from Chaty pod Giewontem when I first saw it tucked away on Za Strugiem street – honestly, the name alone made me do a double-take trying to pronounce it. But this little 3-star place completely surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible. The location is actually perfect if you know Zakopane at all; you’re literally in the shadow of Giewont mountain (hence the name), and while Za Strugiem isn’t the main drag with all the tourist chaos, you’re still close enough to walk to Krupówki street when you want that whole bustling mountain town vibe. The thing is, being slightly off the beaten path means you get to sleep without drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM, which – trust me – is a blessing during peak season.
What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually care about the place. Check-in was smooth, no weird hidden fees or awkward upselling attempts, and they knew their stuff about local hiking trails. The rooms themselves are clean and comfortable enough, though don’t expect luxury spa vibes – it’s more like staying at a really well-run mountain lodge. The windows face toward Giewont, and on clear mornings you get this incredible view that makes you want to grab your hiking boots immediately. I will say the walls are a bit thin (typical for these older Zakopane buildings), but it wasn’t terrible – just don’t expect complete silence if your neighbors are early risers preparing for a dawn hike up Kasprowy Wierch.
Here’s the thing that really sealed it for me: the whole place just feels authentic. You’re not staying in some corporate chain that could be anywhere in the world – this is distinctly Polish mountain hospitality, and somehow they’ve managed to nail that balance between being welcoming to tourists while still feeling like a place locals would actually recommend. The breakfast was solid traditional stuff, parking was straightforward (which, if you’ve driven through Zakopane’s narrow streets, you’ll appreciate), and honestly, for the price point, I left feeling like I’d found one of those hidden gems that doesn’t stay hidden for long. The 9-point rating makes total sense once you factor in the location, the genuine hospitality, and the fact that you’re getting way more value than you’d expect from a 3-star place. It’s not fancy, but it’s exactly what you want when you’re using Zakopane as your base for exploring the Tatras – comfortable, authentic, and run by people who clearly give a damn about their guests’ experience.
