Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Chata HOME Stará Lesná – I mean, it’s tucked away in this tiny village that most people just drive through on their way to the High Tatras. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones hiding in plain sight. This place sits right at the edge of Stará Lesná (which literally means “Old Forest,” and trust me, the name fits), and while it’s got that traditional Slovak chalet vibe going on, there’s something refreshingly modern about how they run things.
The location is actually pretty brilliant once you think about it. You’re maybe ten minutes from Tatranská Lomnica if you need the tourist stuff – cable cars, souvenir shops, that whole scene – but here you get to wake up to actual quiet. Well, except for the occasional cow bell from the meadows nearby, which honestly becomes kind of charming after the first morning. The parking situation is straightforward (thank god, because some mountain places make you hike your luggage), and the owners clearly know their stuff when it comes to what travelers actually need. I’m talking about things like having decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes, proper heating that you can actually control, and – this might sound small but it matters – enough electrical outlets in sensible places.
What really sold me on this place was how it manages to feel both homey and professional at the same time. The whole “HOME” part of the name isn’t just marketing speak – they’ve actually nailed that feeling where you’re comfortable enough to spread out your hiking gear in the room without feeling like you’re trashing some pristine hotel suite. The building itself has that solid mountain architecture that you see all over this part of Slovakia, but inside it’s been updated thoughtfully. No weird color schemes or trying-too-hard design choices, just clean lines and materials that make sense for the climate. And here’s something I appreciated – the sound insulation is actually decent, so you’re not hearing every footstep from the room above or conversation in the hallway. Given that this area gets pretty busy during ski season and summer hiking months, that attention to detail really shows. The whole experience just feels… I don’t know, intentional? Like someone actually thought about what it’s like to stay here rather than just checking boxes on some hospitality manual. If you’re planning to explore this part of the Tatras and want a base that’s both comfortable and authentic – without paying resort prices – this is definitely worth considering.
