You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Chata Green on Severná street – honestly, the name made me think it might be some basic mountain lodge. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this quiet residential area of Veľká Lomnica, and I mean quiet – no tour buses rumbling past at 6 AM, which was honestly a relief after some of my other Slovakian hotel experiences.
The thing about Chata Green is that it feels like someone actually thought about what travelers need, rather than just checking boxes for star ratings. The parking situation is solid (trust me, this matters when you’re dragging luggage around mountain towns), and the check-in was refreshingly straightforward – none of that awkward standing around while they explain seventeen different breakfast times. What really got me was how the staff knew the area inside and out. When I asked about hiking routes toward the Tatras, the guy at reception didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – he actually sketched out a route on the back of an envelope and told me which sections get muddy after rain. That’s local knowledge you can’t fake.
The rooms themselves hit that sweet spot between mountain cozy and actually functional. I mean, sure, it’s not going to blow you away with avant-garde design, but everything works properly (looking at you, European shower doors that never quite close). The beds are legitimately comfortable – I slept better here than I had in weeks of travel – and there’s enough space to actually unpack without playing furniture Tetris. What I really appreciated was the attention to small stuff: proper reading lights, outlets where you need them, and windows that open wide enough to get that crisp mountain air flowing through. The whole place has this unpretentious charm that makes you want to stick around rather than just crash for the night.
Here’s the thing though – Veľká Lomnica isn’t exactly party central, so if you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll want to head into Poprad (about fifteen minutes by car). But honestly? That’s part of what makes Chata Green work so well. You’re close enough to access the bigger towns and tourist spots, but far enough removed that you can actually hear yourself think. The location puts you right in the sweet spot for exploring the High Tatras without dealing with the crowds and inflated prices of the main resort towns. I found myself using it as a base for day trips and actually looking forward to coming back each evening – which, let’s be honest, doesn’t happen at every hotel. For a four-star place, it punches above its weight in all the ways that actually matter when you’re traveling.
