Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in the High Tatras, but Chata Alex in Stará Lesná honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. When you first pull up (parking’s easy, by the way), it doesn’t scream “fancy hotel” from the outside. It’s got that traditional Slovak mountain lodge feel, sort of blending into the forest around it, which actually makes sense once you realize how close you are to the Tatra National Park trails. I mean, you’re literally a ten-minute walk from some of the best hiking in Slovakia.
What really gets me about this place is how the owners – and you can tell they’re hands-on – have managed to nail that sweet spot between mountain authenticity and actual comfort. The rooms have this warm wood paneling that could feel kitschy, but somehow doesn’t, probably because everything’s so well-maintained and thoughtfully done. You know what I love? The windows are huge, and if you get a room facing the mountains (ask for one), you’ll wake up to views that honestly make you forget you’re still in a hotel. The beds are proper comfortable too – none of that too-soft or rock-hard nonsense you sometimes get at mountain places.
Here’s the thing about Stará Lesná that most people don’t realize until they’re here: it’s perfectly positioned between the touristy chaos of Tatranská Lomnica and the more remote trails, so you get the best of both worlds. From Chata Alex, you can walk to the funicular station in about fifteen minutes if you want to head up to Skalnaté pleso, or you can go the other direction toward Tatranská Kotlina for quieter forest walks. The staff actually knows the trails – like, really knows them – so they’ll point you toward stuff that matches what you’re looking for instead of just handing you a generic map.
I stayed here in late September, which turned out to be perfect timing. The summer crowds were gone, the leaves were just starting to turn, and honestly, the whole area felt like it belonged to just a handful of us hikers. Mornings were crisp enough that the breakfast room’s fireplace actually mattered, and there’s something about having coffee while looking out at mist rolling through the forest that just works. The breakfast itself is solid Slovak fare – nothing fancy, but proper fuel for a day in the mountains, with local cheeses and bread that’s clearly from somewhere nearby, not shipped in from who knows where.
What really sealed it for me was coming back after a long day on the trails to find they’d left the sauna running late (most places shut everything down by 8 PM). After hiking from Skalnaté pleso down through the Velická valley, that sauna felt like pure luxury. It’s these little touches – keeping things flexible, actually caring whether guests are comfortable – that make Chata Alex feel less like a hotel and more like staying with friends who happen to live in one of the most beautiful parts of Slovakia.
