You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Chalupa Daniel on Antošovský vrch – honestly, the name alone had me curious. But this little gem sitting up on the hill above Ždiar completely won me over. The drive up can be a bit winding (especially if you’re coming from the main road through town), but once you’re there, you get why they built it where they did. The views looking out toward the Belianske Tatras are absolutely stunning, and I mean that in the way where you actually stop scrolling your phone and just stare for a minute.
The place has this really authentic Slovak mountain lodge feel without being kitschy about it – you can tell the owners actually care about the details. My room was spotless and had that fresh mountain air smell when I opened the windows, which I kept open pretty much the whole time because the breeze up there is incredible. The beds are properly comfortable (not those rock-hard European mattresses you sometimes get), and the bathrooms are modern without feeling sterile. What really got me though was how quiet it is at night – I mean, dead quiet except for the occasional rustle of trees. If you’re used to city noise, it might actually take some getting used to. The staff speaks decent English, which helped since my Slovak is basically non-existent, and they’re genuinely helpful with hiking recommendations and local spots to check out.
I have to say, the breakfast spread is way better than it needs to be for a place this size – lots of local specialties and fresh stuff, not just the usual continental setup. They do get busy during peak hiking season (July and August especially), so if you’re planning to visit then, definitely book ahead. The parking situation is totally fine, by the way – there’s plenty of space and it’s right there, no hiking your luggage up stairs or anything. Honestly, if you’re looking for a proper mountain escape that feels authentic but doesn’t make you rough it, this is exactly what you want. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find yourself sitting on the terrace way longer than planned, just watching the light change on the peaks and wondering why you don’t do this more often.
