Chalupa Bocza

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Chalupa Bocza in Nižná Boca – I mean, it’s tucked away in this tiny Slovak village that most people drive right through on their way to the Tatras. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones hiding in plain sight.

The place sits right there on the main road through the village, and at first glance it looks almost too quiet, too simple. But that’s exactly what makes it work. The owners – and I’m pretty sure they live on-site because I kept seeing the same friendly faces – have this way of making you feel like you’re staying at your Slovak grandmother’s house, if your grandmother happened to run a really well-thought-out 4-star operation. The rooms are spotless (I mean, seriously spotless), and they’ve got this cozy mountain lodge thing going on without being all kitschy about it. What really got me was the attention to small stuff – good water pressure, blackout curtains that actually block light, and honestly some of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept in during my travels through Central Europe.

Here’s what you need to know about the location though – Nižná Boca isn’t exactly a nightlife destination, but that’s the whole point. You’re about a 20-minute drive from Liptovský Mikuláš if you need proper restaurants or shopping, and the thermal baths at Bešeňová are close enough for an easy day trip. The village itself is perfect for those early morning walks when the mist is still hanging over the hills, and parking is never an issue (which, if you’ve driven around Slovakia, you’ll appreciate). I stayed during late spring and the place was quiet but not dead – just right for actually unwinding. The staff speaks decent English, which is a relief when you’re trying to figure out local hiking trails or where to grab groceries. Actually, they drew me this little map showing a shortcut to some ruins up in the hills that I never would have found otherwise. It’s that kind of personal touch that bumps a good stay into something memorable. Sure, you’re not getting a spa or room service here, but with a 9 out of 10 rating, they’re clearly doing something very right with the basics.
