You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Chalupa Beliankovo in Ždiar – honestly, the name alone had me wondering what I’d gotten myself into. But this place absolutely surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s tucked right into this gorgeous spot where the High Tatras just sort of embrace the village, and when you’re standing outside in the morning with your coffee, you can actually hear the Belá River running nearby. The whole setup feels authentically Slovak in a way that’s hard to fake – you’re not getting some sanitized resort experience here, but rather something that feels like staying at your Slovak friend’s really nice mountain house (if your friend happens to run a proper 4-star operation).
The thing about Ždiar is that it’s still got this working village vibe – locals actually live here year-round, it’s not just a tourist playground. So when you walk down to the village center, maybe fifteen minutes from the chalupa, you’re seeing real life happening alongside the hiking boots and ski gear. The owners clearly get this balance right; they’ve kept the traditional wooden architecture that makes these Spiš region buildings so distinctive, but inside everything works the way modern travelers expect it to. I stayed in late September when the crowds had mostly cleared out, and honestly, that might be the perfect time – you get those incredible autumn colors on the mountainsides, but you can still hike most of the trails without dealing with summer crowds or winter weather complications.
What really sold me on this place, though, was how the staff actually knew the area. When I asked about hiking routes up toward Bachledova Valley, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a generic brochure – he pulled out this worn topographic map and showed me exactly where the trail gets tricky and which viewpoints are worth the extra climb. That kind of local knowledge is gold when you’re trying to make the most of your time in the Tatras. The rooms themselves are honestly better than I expected for a mountain lodge – clean, comfortable, and they’ve got that solid, quiet feeling you want after a day of hiking. Plus, parking was straightforward (which, trust me, isn’t always a given in these mountain villages), and I never felt rushed during check-in or like they were trying to upsell me on everything. It’s the sort of place where you end up staying an extra day just because leaving feels premature, especially when you wake up to those mountain views and realize you could spend weeks exploring the trails that fan out from Ždiar in every direction.
