Chalet Ursa Mare
You know what caught me off guard about Chalet Ursa Mare? Walking up to this place on strada principala, I was expecting just another mountain lodge – but there’s something genuinely special happening here that explains that crazy 9.9 rating. I mean, you don’t see scores like that without good reason.
The thing about Vîrfuri is that it’s tucked away in this perfect spot where the Dâmbovița peaks really start to show off, and the chalet sits right in the sweet spot where you get those morning views that make you forget to check your phone. The owners – and I’m pretty sure they live on-site because they know everything about the area – they’ve managed to keep it feeling like an actual mountain retreat instead of some corporate hotel trying to play dress-up. The rooms are honestly more comfortable than the three-star rating suggests, with these thick wooden beams and windows that actually open wide (you’d be surprised how many places have those tiny hotel windows that barely crack). There’s this smell of pine and something else – maybe it’s just the mountain air, but it hits you the moment you walk in.
What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. You’re far enough from Brașov that you don’t get any city noise, but close enough that you’re not completely isolated if you need supplies or want to explore. The staff actually knows the hiking trails – like, they’ll tell you which path to take to avoid the crowds on weekends, or where to find those little waterfalls that aren’t in the guidebooks. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too, none of that awkward hovering around wondering if your room is ready. And honestly, the parking situation is way better than most mountain places – there’s actual space, not some tiny gravel patch where you’re playing car Tetris. The only minor thing is that the WiFi can be spotty when weather rolls in, but honestly, if you’re coming to the Carpathians to stare at your laptop, you’re doing it wrong anyway. This is the kind of place where you end up staying an extra day just because leaving feels wrong, especially when you’re sitting on their terrace with coffee watching the morning light hit those peaks.
