CHALET Martuška
You know what struck me first about CHALET Martuška? It’s tucked into this gorgeous valley setting in Levočská Dolina – honestly, I wasn’t expecting such a peaceful spot just outside Levoča. The moment you pull up (and yes, parking is actually easy here, which is rare), you get this immediate sense that someone really cares about this place. It’s got that authentic Slovak mountain lodge feel without trying too hard, if that makes sense.
The chalet itself sits perfectly in the landscape – you’re surrounded by these rolling hills that honestly make you want to just sit on the terrace with coffee for way longer than you planned. I mean, I’m usually the type who’s out exploring all day, but something about this spot just makes you slow down. The rooms have this cozy, almost homey quality that you don’t get in your typical hotel. They’ve managed to keep things modern (the bathrooms are actually really nice) while still feeling like you’re staying in someone’s well-loved mountain retreat. The beds are properly comfortable too – and I’m picky about that stuff after years of travel writing.
What really sets this place apart though is how it connects you to the area. Levoča is just a short drive away, and if you haven’t been to that medieval town square yet, well… you’re missing out. But here’s the thing – most tourists rush through, snap their photos, and leave. Staying at Martuška means you can actually experience Levoča properly, maybe catch the evening light on those old buildings when the day-trippers have gone home. The owners (and I chatted with them a bit during check-in) actually know the region inside and out. They’ll point you toward hiking trails that aren’t overrun, or tell you when the local markets are worth visiting. It’s that kind of insider knowledge you just can’t get from a chain hotel. The breakfast was solid too – nothing fancy, but proper local ingredients and they actually asked about dietary restrictions without making it feel like a big production. Honestly, after staying at places that charge twice as much for half the character, finding somewhere like this feels like stumbling onto a secret that locals have been keeping to themselves.
