Căsuța cu tihnă
You know what struck me first about Căsuța cu tihnă? The name itself – it literally means “the house with peace” in Romanian, and honestly, they nailed it. I stumbled across this place while driving through Porumbacu de Sus (yeah, I know, try saying that five times fast), and it’s tucked right on Strada Principala, which is basically the main drag through this mountain village in Sibiu County. The thing is, even though it’s on the “main” street, this isn’t exactly Times Square we’re talking about – it’s more like a sleepy ribbon of road that winds through the Carpathian foothills.
The building itself has that traditional Romanian charm without feeling like someone’s trying too hard to be rustic. I mean, you’re literally staying in what feels like a local family’s lovingly restored home, complete with wooden shutters and those small details that make you want to Instagram everything (but in a good way, not in a tacky tourist way). What really got me was how quiet it gets at night – and I’m talking about that deep mountain silence where you can actually hear yourself think. The rooms are surprisingly spacious for a village guesthouse, and the beds are seriously comfortable. I slept like a rock, which doesn’t always happen when I’m traveling.
Here’s the local knowledge bit that most people miss: Porumbacu de Sus is perfectly positioned if you want to explore the Cindrel Mountains without dealing with the crowds in Brașov or Sinaia. The hiking trails literally start from the village, and the hosts – who actually live there year-round – know every shortcut and secret spot worth visiting. They’ll tell you which trails are muddy after rain (important info, trust me) and where to find the best ciorbă de burtă in the valley. Parking is never an issue, which is a blessing if you’ve ever tried to find a spot in Romania’s touristy mountain towns during peak season. The whole experience feels authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find – no tour buses, no souvenir shops selling mass-produced “traditional” crafts, just you and the mountains and people who genuinely care about showing you their corner of the world. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra day just because leaving feels wrong.
