Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard “Castle Distillery” was actually a hotel, I was pretty skeptical. I mean, you’re staying in what used to be an actual distillery in this tiny Slovak town called Stará Ľubovňa, right on Zámocká street (which literally means “castle street,” by the way). But honestly? This place surprised me in the best possible way.

The building itself has this incredible industrial charm that they’ve somehow managed to make feel luxurious without losing its character. You know what struck me first? The smell – not alcohol or anything weird, but this subtle woody, aged scent that just makes the whole place feel authentic. The rooms are spacious, and I actually loved how they incorporated some of the original distillery elements into the design. My room had these massive wooden beams overhead, and the bathroom – well, let’s just say it’s way nicer than what you’d expect in a small Slovak town. The staff genuinely seemed to care about making sure everything was perfect, which you don’t always get at four-star places. Check-in was smooth, and they actually gave me some solid recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps.

Here’s the thing about Stará Ľubovňa that most people don’t realize – it’s not just some random stop on your way to the Tatras. The actual castle (Ľubovňa Castle) is maybe a ten-minute walk uphill from the hotel, and honestly, it’s one of those hidden gems that tour groups somehow miss. The hotel sits perfectly between the old town center and the castle, so you can easily walk to both without dealing with parking headaches. I stayed there in late September, and the area was pretty quiet – which was exactly what I wanted, but if you’re looking for nightlife, well, you’re in the wrong place. The restaurant downstairs serves surprisingly good food (their goulash is legitimately excellent), and they’ve got local beers that pair perfectly with the whole vibe. Breakfast was solid too – nothing fancy, but fresh and filling. One small thing – the WiFi can be a bit spotty in some rooms, but honestly, that kind of added to the whole “disconnect and relax” feeling. If you’re driving, parking is easy and free, which is a huge plus. The location makes it a perfect base if you’re exploring the Spiš region or heading to Poland – the border is literally twenty minutes away. This isn’t your typical hotel experience, and that’s exactly why it works so well.
