Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Casa Timpuri Vechi on General Magheru, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? This little gem completely caught me off guard. The building itself has this weathered charm that fits perfectly with Sibiu’s old town character, and once you step inside, you realize someone actually cared about creating something special here rather than just filling rooms with generic hotel furniture.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience Sibiu like a local rather than just tick off tourist boxes. You’re literally steps away from the medieval center – I mean, you can hear the church bells from the main square without any of the street noise that comes with being right on top of everything. General Magheru is one of those streets where you’ll see actual residents going about their day, not just tour groups. There’s a little bakery about two blocks down that opens ridiculously early (perfect if you’re jet-lagged), and the walk to the famous Liar’s Bridge takes maybe five minutes through these narrow cobblestone streets that GPS always seems to get confused about.
What really surprised me was the attention to detail – the kind of stuff that makes you think the owners actually stay in hotels themselves. The rooms have this cozy, lived-in feel without being cluttered, and honestly, the beds are way more comfortable than you’d expect. The bathrooms are small but cleverly designed (typical for old European buildings), and the water pressure is actually decent, which I can’t say for a lot of places I’ve stayed in Romania. The whole place feels more like a well-kept guesthouse than a hotel, if that makes sense. You won’t find a fancy lobby or room service, but you will find genuinely helpful staff who know the city and seem to enjoy helping guests figure out the best routes to avoid the tourist crowds. I stayed there during shoulder season in October, and while the evenings got pretty chilly, the heating worked perfectly – something that’s not always a given in older buildings. The 9.6 rating makes total sense once you understand what this place is trying to be. It’s not trying to compete with the big chain hotels, but for the price point and location, it delivers exactly what most travelers actually want: a clean, comfortable base that feels authentic to the place you’re visiting.
