Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of three-star places across Romania, and Casa Ris honestly caught me off guard – in the best way possible. You know how sometimes you book a place based on location and decent photos, then cross your fingers? This wasn’t one of those times where you’re disappointed. Right on Strada Ștefan cel Mare (which, if you’re not familiar with Târgu Jiu, is basically the main drag where everything happens), you’re literally in the heart of things without the chaos you’d expect.
The building itself has this understated elegance that I wasn’t expecting – it’s not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but there’s clearly thought put into the details. My room was genuinely quiet despite being on the main street, which honestly surprised me since Romanian traffic can be… well, you know. The staff actually seemed to give a damn, which is refreshing. I mean, check-in was smooth, they knew the neighborhood well enough to give real recommendations (not just the tourist trap stuff), and when I had a minor issue with the AC, someone was up to fix it within like twenty minutes.
What really sold me on this place was the little things – the coffee in the morning was actually good coffee, not that instant stuff you sometimes get, and the beds were properly comfortable. I’m talking about the kind of sleep where you wake up and actually feel rested, not like you wrestled with lumpy pillows all night. The whole place feels clean without that sterile hotel smell, if that makes sense. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the water pressure in the shower was fantastic – you travelers out there know how hit-or-miss that can be in smaller cities.
Târgu Jiu itself is worth mentioning because it’s one of those places that grows on you. Sure, it’s not Bucharest or Cluj, but there’s something genuine about it. You’re walking distance from Brâncuși’s sculptures (which, honestly, are pretty incredible if you take the time), and the town center has this laid-back vibe that’s perfect after a long day of driving through the countryside. The hotel sits right in the middle of it all – you can grab dinner at some solid local spots without needing a taxi, and there’s actually decent parking nearby, which anyone who’s driven in Romania will appreciate.
I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t luxury, and it’s not trying to be. But sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really, really well, and Casa Ris nails that. The 9.6 rating isn’t some fluke; it’s what happens when a place consistently delivers on what it promises. If you’re passing through Târgu Jiu or using it as a base to explore Gorj County, you could do a lot worse than this spot. Actually, you probably couldn’t do much better at this price point.
