You know that feeling when you stumble onto a place that’s somehow managed to fly under the radar despite being absolutely incredible? That’s Casa Gallo for you. Tucked away on Strada Faurului – which honestly sounds way more intimidating than it actually is – this little gem sits right in the heart of Sibiu’s Old Town, and I mean *right* in it. You’re basically a two-minute walk from the main square where all those colorful baroque buildings cluster around like they’re gossiping about tourists.
The thing that got me about Casa Gallo is how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between feeling authentically Romanian and still being comfortable for travelers who, let’s be honest, sometimes need their creature comforts. The building itself has that old-world charm – you know, thick stone walls that actually keep the summer heat out and the winter cold at bay – but inside, everything works the way it should. The WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, the shower has proper pressure, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’m looking at you, every other “historic” hotel I’ve stayed at). The rooms have these gorgeous wooden beams overhead, and some of them look out onto the cobblestone streets where you can watch locals heading to work in the morning with their coffee and pastries.
What really sold me, though, was the staff’s approach to hospitality. They’re not hovering or overly formal, but they clearly know Sibiu inside and out. When I mentioned wanting to find good local food that wasn’t just tourist-trap sausage and cabbage, they sent me to this tiny restaurant about six blocks away where I had the best ciorbă de burtă of my entire trip – and I honestly never thought I’d be the kind of person who’d get excited about tripe soup. They also clued me in on the fact that if you walk up to the Upper Town early in the morning, around 7 AM, you’ll have those Instagram-famous “eyes of Sibiu” rooftops almost entirely to yourself. The location means you’re close enough to everything that matters, but Strada Faurului itself is just quiet enough that you’re not dealing with groups of drunk tourists stumbling past your window at 2 AM. I mean, you’ll still hear the occasional late-night conversation echoing off the stone walls – that’s just old town life – but it’s more charming than disruptive. And parking, if you’re driving, is actually manageable here, which is saying something for this part of Romania.
