The thing is, most visitors to Târgu Jiu are just passing through to see Brâncuși’s sculptures (which you absolutely should do – they’re about ten minutes away), but Casa Caroli makes you want to stick around longer than planned. The owners clearly put thought into the details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms have this comfortable, uncluttered feel – not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but definitely a step above your standard 3-star setup. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, even though you’re still close enough to the center that you can walk to decent restaurants without needing a car. Speaking of cars, parking here is actually straightforward, which… if you’ve driven around Romanian city centers, you’ll know that’s not always a given.

Here’s the thing about this part of Târgu Jiu – it’s got that authentic Romanian neighborhood vibe where you’ll see locals heading to the market in the morning and kids playing in the courtyards. Casa Caroli sits right in the middle of this without feeling out of place, which is honestly refreshing. The staff seem to genuinely know the area too, not just the tourist spots but where to get good coffee (there’s a little place two streets over that locals actually use) and which days the markets are worth visiting. I stayed here in late spring when the weather was perfect for walking around, and the whole area just felt… comfortable, I guess? Like you could settle into a routine if you were staying longer. The breakfast situation is solid – nothing fancy, but proper Romanian staples done well, plus they actually had decent coffee, which sometimes you can’t count on. Look, it’s not going to change your life or anything, but Casa Caroli does exactly what a good hotel should do: it gets out of your way and lets you enjoy being wherever you are.
