Casa bunicilor
You know what’s funny about Casa bunicilor? The name literally means “grandparents’ house” in Romanian, and honestly, that’s exactly what this place feels like – except your grandparents happened to live in one of the most quietly stunning parts of Transylvania. I stumbled across this gem in Ucea de Jos while driving the backroads between Brașov and Sibiu, and I’m so glad I did.
The thing about this little village is that most people just blow through it on their way to the bigger tourist spots, but they’re missing out. Casa bunicilor sits right on Strada Principală – which sounds fancy but is really just the main road through town – and from the outside, it looks like any other traditional Romanian house with its neat garden and that particular shade of yellow paint you see everywhere in Transylvania. But step inside and you get why it’s pulling a perfect 10 rating. The owners (I think they’re actually a local family, not some hotel chain) have somehow managed to keep all the authentic details – those heavy wooden beams, the ceramic tile stoves, the thick walls that keep everything cool in summer – while making sure everything actually works properly. I mean, the WiFi was better than my apartment back home, and the shower pressure was honestly impressive for a village this size.
What really got me though was the breakfast spread. They do this whole traditional Romanian thing with local cheeses and honey that definitely came from someone’s backyard hives, plus bread that’s still warm when they bring it out. The woman who runs the place (sorry, I’m terrible with names) kept apologizing for her English, but it was perfectly fine, and she knew everything about the hiking trails up toward the Carpathians. She actually drew me a little map to this viewpoint about twenty minutes up the hill where you can see the whole valley – and yeah, barely anyone else knows about it. The village gets pretty quiet after dark, which some people might find too sleepy, but if you’re coming from the chaos of Brașov or Bucharest, it’s exactly what you need. Plus, you’re only about forty minutes from the main tourist trail if you want to hit Bran Castle or the other big sights. Parking’s never an issue here (unlike in the city centers), and I actually felt comfortable leaving my car loaded with camera gear overnight. The rooms are simple but everything’s been thoughtfully updated – good mattresses, proper blackout curtains, and each one’s a little different depending on which part of the house you’re in. Mine overlooked the back garden where they grow their own vegetables, and I could hear the church bells from the village center in the morning. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay an extra day just to slow down and remember what that feels like.
