You know what’s funny about Casa Bunicii? The name literally means “Grandma’s House” in Romanian, and honestly, that’s exactly what it feels like when you walk through the door. I mean, this isn’t some corporate chain trying to fake homey vibes – this is the real deal, tucked away on Strada Principala in Costeşti, which is basically the main drag through this sleepy little town about 20 minutes from Deva.
The thing that gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between authentic and actually comfortable. Sure, it’s only got three stars, but that 9.8 rating isn’t some fluke – the owners (and I’m pretty sure they’re actually a family) just seem to genuinely care about getting the details right. The rooms have this lived-in warmth that you can’t manufacture, with proper wooden furniture that creaks just a little when you open the wardrobe, and windows that actually open wide enough to let in the morning sounds from the street below. There’s usually someone sweeping the sidewalk around 7 AM, and you’ll hear the occasional tractor rumbling past – this is proper rural Romania, after all.
What really sold me though was the breakfast situation. I mean, you’re not getting some sad continental spread here – they’ll set you up with fresh bread (probably from the bakery two streets over), local honey that’s so good it’s almost ridiculous, and coffee that’s actually strong enough to wake you up. The woman who runs the place – I never did catch her name, but she’s got this way of making you feel like you’re visiting relatives – she’ll sit with you for a few minutes if it’s not too busy and tell you about the hiking trails up toward the Dacian fortresses. And listen, if you’re thinking about visiting those UNESCO sites at Sarmizegetusa Regia, you’re not going to find a better base than this. Most people rush through from Deva or Hunedoara, but staying here means you can actually take your time, maybe catch the ruins in that golden hour light when all the tour buses have cleared out. The parking situation is totally fine too – just pull up right in front, no drama. Sometimes I think the best places are the ones that don’t try too hard, you know?
