You know what? Casa Balcescu totally surprised me. I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to this three-star place on Nicolae Balcescu street, I wasn’t expecting much. But there’s something really genuine about this spot that you don’t find in the bigger chain hotels scattered around Brașov.

The location is actually perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere real Romanians might choose. You’re right in a proper residential area, not stuck in some tourist bubble, but here’s the thing – you can still walk to the old town center in about fifteen minutes. The street itself is pretty quiet (which means you’ll actually sleep), and there’s this little bakery just two blocks down that does incredible covrigi in the mornings. The owner, I think his name was Radu, genuinely seemed to care about whether guests were comfortable, which honestly isn’t something you can fake. Check-in was smooth, no weird surprises with the room, and the Wi-Fi actually worked – I mean, it worked well enough that I could video call home without wanting to throw my laptop out the window.

What really got me was the attention to small details that matter when you’re tired from walking around all day. The beds are properly comfortable (not those rock-hard mattresses some European hotels seem to love), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure. There’s parking right there if you’re driving, which in Brașov can be a real headache elsewhere. The breakfast setup is simple but good – fresh bread, local cheese, proper coffee, not that instant stuff. During my stay in late September, the place was busy but not chaotic, and you could tell they know how to handle guests without making a big production out of everything. I actually ended up chatting with a couple from Germany who’d been coming back here for three years running, which tells you something. The 8.6 rating makes total sense when you consider you’re getting honest value without pretense – it’s not trying to be fancy, it’s just trying to be good at what it does. If you want to stay somewhere that feels connected to actual Brașov life rather than tourist-land, Casa Balcescu delivers on that completely.
